Extend SkyTrain hours- Surrey/North Delta Leader, April 30, 2008

Re: "Thinking late-night transit? Think again", April 18.

I was very concerned to read Deborah Edwards' letter about being stranded outside of the 29th Avenue SkyTrain station after taking transit home from a late-night concert. Ms. Edwards' experience speaks to the absolute inadequacy of some aspects of public transit in this region.

Anyone who uses public transit as their primary mode of transportation, either for financial, environmental, or other reasons, has very limited options late at night for getting around. On some routes, service ends completely at a certain point, like on SkyTrain, even when there may still be large numbers of people who need to get places; on others the service can become so infrequent that waiting for a bus becomes a serious safety issue.

I strongly believe that SkyTrain service, in particular, could easily be extended to run for longer hours to serve those people attending late-night events, working night shifts, or needing to get around for other reasons. There's a great petition on Facebook to extend SkyTrain service that people should consider signing- it can be found at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=6666586191.
